PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

Background

Our Senior Project is located in the State of California, in the San Bernardino County area, in the city of San Bernardino. The study boundary includes the I-215 starting at University Pkwy and ending north of Palm Ave.

After our initial analysis, we identified the needs of our project location. First, there is a need to accommodate regional population growth in the city of San Bernardino. The city’s population is expected to grow by 1.8% annually between the years 2025 and 2045. The reason we picked these years is that construction is expected to finish in 2025, and 2045 is the minimum design life. If no improvements are made, the current capacity will not be able to handle the population increase.

The poor intersection spacing between Kendall Dr. and Hallmark Pkwy along Palm Ave. creates congestion. The spacing between Palm/Kendall intersection and the northbound ramp intersection is 286 ft. and 439 ft. between the southbound ramps and northbound ramps. Since the minimum spacing between major intersections is 500ft, the existing spacing along Palm ave needs to be corrected.

Finally, the city’s general plan requires active transportation availability throughout San Bernardino. During our site investigation (click), we noticed Palm Ave and several surrounding streets lacked sidewalks and bike lanes. Therefore, our project looked towards integrating active transportation and complete streets elements

The purpose of this project is to increase capacity, accommodate future demand, address the intersection spacing, and improve pedestrian and active transportation mobility. Now I will hand it off to Maria to talk about environmental considerations.
